Public forum scheduled to view, discuss Campustown changes

The public is invited to view and provide input on the proposed design concepts and traffic circulation plans for the campustown area at an informational meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The meeting will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. in Conference Room 403 at the Illinois Terminal Building, 45 E. University Ave., Champaign.

The event is being sponsored by the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, the cities of Champaign and Urbana engineering and planning staff, Campustown 2000, the Champaign-Urbana Urbanized Area Transportation Study (CUUATS) and the UI in conjunction with project engineering consultants.

Three possible streetscape designs and a proposed traffic circulation plan were displayed at an open house and public workshop at the Illinois Terminal Building on Aug. 8. The display also included prototypes of street lamps and signage. Public feedback received during that forum and a previous input session have been incorporated into a final concept, which will be available for viewing at the Sept. 12 forum.

The traffic circulation plans being proposed include constructing a pedestrian plaza on Wright Street between Daniel and John streets. Wright Street would be configured to facilitate two-way transit. Plans also include construction of bike paths along Daniel Street between Fourth and Sixth streets as well as construction of angled parking spaces along Sixth Street.

Anyone interested in attending the Sept. 12 meeting should call 328-3313 to reserve a seat.
