Events scheduled for Disability
Awareness Week
The fourth annual Disability Awareness Week takes place April 21-27,
and the UI has scheduled a number of activities in recognition of the
event:
- Sunday,
April 21
10 a.m.-5 p.m.: 24th Annual Delta Sigma Omicron Wheel-a-thon, an annual
charity fund-raiser. To register or pledge, go to Room 136 Division
of Rehabilitation Education Center. Registrations also will be accepted
at the event. Proceeds are donated to two national and one local organization
that focus on services for persons with disabilities. For additional
information, contact Delta Sigma Omicron at 333-4607 or e-mail dso@illinois.edu.
In case of rain, the event will be held in the Armory.
- Monday,
April 22
8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. (all week): Wheels for the World Wheelchair Drive,
an event that takes donations of old and used wheelchairs and issues
them to children and persons with disabilities in Third World countries.
Wheelchairs can be dropped off at the Division of Rehabilitation-Education
Center.
6:15-7:45 p.m.: Illini Union Bowling and Billiards, Illini Union.
Come and bowl for free. Ramps will be available for accessibility.
Space is limited to 20 people.
- Tuesday,
April 23
4-5 p.m.: Ice Sports Clinic, Ice Arena. Come try the specially designed
sleds for ice hockey, racing and skating, or bring your friends and
put together a team for a game of broomball.
8 p.m.: "My Body, My Sickness, Our Secrets and Love" and
"This Fine Line," presented by Inner Voices Social Issues
Theater. These scenes explore issues that arise for people with hidden
disabilities. A discussion will follow the performance, Room B, Illini
Union.
- Wednesday,
April 24
Noon-1 p.m.: Poetry Reading, Authors Corner, Illini Union Bookstore.
Come share your talent, or simply sit back and relax while others
share their writings or favorite poetry during this open mic event.
Feel free to bring your lunch.
- Thursday,
April 25
8:30a.m.: Student Affairs Staff Coffee, 314 Illini Union. A panel
of students with disabilities will answer questions and share their
experiences with staff members and students from the Office of Student
Affairs.
10 a.m.-3 p.m.: "Celebrating Human Wellness," the McKinley
Health Center Special Populations ninth Annual Health Fair, which
this year will honor Maya Angelou, in Illini Union Rooms A, B and
C. Explore exhibitions from campus and community organizations, including
free blood pressure checks, free sugar screenings, free cholesterol
screenings, spinal checks and bone density checks; donate blood; or
enjoy a live DJ, performances, prizes, games and free food.
8 p.m.: "My Body, My Sickness, Our Secrets and Love" and

- Saturday,
April 27
1 p.m.: "Paperhouse," Roger Eberts Overlooked Film
Festival, Virginia Theatre, 203 W. Park, Champaign. A film for all
ages, this free matinee is about a sick girl who imagines a friend.
Bernard Rose, the films director, will answer questions at the
end of the film. A section for wheelchair seating will be reserved;
10 seats are available. Contact Maureen Gilbert at 333-4607 to reserve
a seat by April 19.
11 a.m.-4 p.m.: Boccie Ball and Power Soccer Demonstration, Kenney
Gymnasium. Equipment for playing both sports will be available, and
participants will be introduced to the rules, the play of the game
and a small competition.
