Ahead of schedule
Portions of
Green Street that have been closed to traffic since March will
reopen the first week of August as the first phase of the Campustown
Infrastructure Reconstruction and Streetscape Project nears completion.
City officials and Campustown merchants are planning an Aug. 22
Green Street Reopening Celebration, complete with live music,
sidewalk sales and a parade.
The
$5.5 million project, which includes new sewers, sidewalks and
traffic circulation plans, should be substantially completed well
ahead of the Aug. 23 deadline, according to Veronica Gonzalez,
city of Champaign implementation planner. Detail work, such as
installation of landscaping, street lights, planters, benches,
bicycle racks and trash receptacles, will continue into the fall.
The
second phase of construction will begin in spring 2003 along Sixth
Street between Healey and John streets with completion expected
by August 2003.
