Researchers examining how Tai Chi may benefit older people
As they age, people tend to become more prone to slipping, tripping and falling. And the results of such missteps and tumbles sometimes can be catastrophic.
That’s why movement researchers are increasingly focusing on the physiological effects and potential health benefits associated with Taiji – or Tai Chi, as it is more commonly known in the United States.
Earliest steps can play a role in how well preschoolers learn math
How a child comes to understand "two-ness" and "three-ness" and other basic but abstract concepts lays the foundation for what comes later.
Research in recent decades shows that preschoolers have more potential to develop "informal math knowledge" than was previously realized, said researcher Art Baroody, a UI professor of education.
   

Findings in frog oocytes may help study of chromosome physiology
Researchers studying the nuclei of frog oocytes in early stages of meiosis – the cell division that gives rise to germ cells – have found that two key proteins remain apart at a crucial time before condensation occurs. One of the proteins may be important in the early organization of chromosomes and later may recruit the other.

Increased prescription-drug use by elderly leading to rising costs
The big challenge facing the federal government will not be passing legislation to help the elderly buy prescription drugs, but keeping the costs of the program from skyrocketing out of control, according to an article in a UI law journal.

Journalism head named interim dean of College of Communications
Ronald E. Yates, head of the UI journalism department, has been named interim dean of the College of Communications on the Urbana campus, effective Aug. 21, pending approval of the UI Board of Trustees at its Sept. 11 meeting.

Two major exhibitions open Krannert Art Museum fall season
Two major exhibitions – one featuring African art, the other photographic images of the American South – will open the fall 2003 season at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Krannert Art Museum in late August and early September.

Daniel Honnold, musical instrument technician II, has worked at the UI for six years. He spends most of his time tuning pianos and doing repairs. He and a fellow technician also rebuild pianos between other projects. More

Robert Crane, 78, died Aug. 10 at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield. Crane joined the UI Office of the Dean of Students in 1960. In 1964 he left the Urbana-Champaign campus and joined the staff at UI’s Chicago campus. He became associate to the chancellor.

Anthea S. Fottler, 86, died Aug. 7 at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana. Fottler worked at the UI for 38 years, retiring in 1989 as a secretary IV in the College of Applied Life Studies. She returned to work as extra help from 1990 to 1994.

Bonnie Beatrice Suycott Franks, 92, died Aug. 7 at her home in Philo. Franks was a clerk typist III at the UI library for 19 years, retiring in 1980. Memorials: Zion Lutheran Church, or the Carle Foundation Hospital Hospice Memorial Fund.

Julie Frichtl, 43, died Aug. 7 at her Urbana home. Frichtl had been assistant director of alumni relations and special events at the Alumni Association since December 1999. Prior to joining the Alumni Association, she worked as development associate for WILL-AM-FM-TV in the Division of Broadcasting since 1993. Memorials: Carle Cancer Center, Attn: Laura, 602 W. University Ave., Urbana, IL 61801; or WILL-AM-FM-TV, 300 N. Goodwin Ave., MC-252.

Jerry Friend, 85, died Aug. 10 at Heritage Nursing Center of Champaign. Friend retired from the UI in 1980 as a building service worker for the Division of Operation and Maintenance. He worked at the UI for nine years.

Donald W. Paden, 89, died Aug. 6 at Meadowbrook Healthcare Center, Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana. Paden served on the UI faculty as vice chairman of the department of economics, director of the Center for Economic Education, director of undergraduate studies and professor emeritus. Memorials: Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, c/o UI Foundation, Harker Hall, 1305 Green St., MC-386, or the American Rhododendron Society, 11 Pinecrest Drive, Fortune, CA 95540.

Marilyn Irene Thurber, 70, died Aug. 16 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Thurber worked at the UI for 18 years, retiring in 1994 as accounting clerk for the UI Office of Business Affairs. She also worked as extra help from 1994 to 1997. Memorials: Faith United Methodist Church, Champaign.

Delores B. “Dee” Wallace, 79, died Aug. 6 at West Chester Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, West Chester, Ohio. Wallace was a head librarian of the UI Art and Architecture Library, retiring in 1987 as assistant professor emerita of library administration. She worked at the UI for 20 years. Memorials: Urbana Free Library.

Ricky Arthur Weinberg, 54, died Aug. 7 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Weinberg was chief pilot and head of the Professional Pilot Division at the UI Institute of Aviation. He had worked at the institute for nearly 30 years. Memorials: Twin City Bible Church, Urbana, or to an organization of the donor’s choice.
