Krannert Art Museum
Fall exhibitions announced
Krannert Art Museum opens its 2006-07 season with a splash this week,
with three new exhibitions and a festive public opening reception
from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 24 that includes music by Water Between Continents
featuring Brian Reedy and Nick Rudd. Receiving top billing is the
popular “School of Art and Design Faculty Art Exhibition,” which
runs through Sept. 24.
Also opening: “Cosmic Consciousness: The Work of Robert Bannister,” guest
curated by Glen Davies and spotlighting paintings and drawings by the
Urbana-born outsider artist; and “Surrealist Interventions: Selections
From Krannert Art Museum and the University of Illinois Library,” guest
curated by Jordana Mendelson, UI professor of art history. The show
pairs surrealist paintings, photographs, prints and drawings with examples
of the movement’s print culture.
A fourth exhibition, “David Svensson/SpaceLight,” opens
Sept. 1 in the Link Gallery, located in the space that connects the
museum and the Art and Design Building. The first U.S. museum presentation
of work by the emerging Swedish artist, the show will feature seven
glowing sculptural works, visible from inside and outside the Link’s
glass walls.
Several events are planned in conjunction with the exhibitions. See
the Inside Illinois calendar and museum Web site, www.kam.uiuc.edu for more information.
Sinfonia da Camera
Gala celebration kicks off concert series
Sinfonia da Camera, the state’s premier chamber orchestra, under
the direction of UI music professor Ian Hobson, will kick off its 23rd
concert season at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts with a celebration
of the College of Fine and Applied Arts’ 75th anniversary. The

of the local and worldwide community, honoring triumphs of the past
and present.
The first concert of the season celebrates artistic milestones at 7:30
p.m. Sept. 23 with a new work by composer Keeril Makan, a UI professor
of composition theory. The piece pays homage to the achievements of
the College of Fine and Applied Arts during the past 75 years. Violinist
Graeme Jennings and violist Masumi Rostad will help Sinfonia celebrate
the International Year of Mozart with a performance of Mozart’s “Sinfonia
Concertante” and Robert Schumann’s “Overture to Manfred.” The
concert will end with a tribute to Shostakovich and a performance of “Symphony
No. 9.”
