Donald Brieland, 87, died Sept. 30 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Brieland, a UI professor of social work for 12 years who served as its dean for seven of those years, left the university in 1982 to serve as the dean of the Jane Addams College of Social Work at UIC. Derys M. Harper, 76, died Sept. 19 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Harper was a typing clerk for the UI Housing Division for 15 years, retiring in 1997. Memorials: American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org.
Rodney Henderson, 68, died Sept. 14, at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Henderson was a building service worker in UI Housing for 28 years, retiring in 2005.
William L. Mathis, 76, died Sept. 14 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Mathis worked at the UI for 30 years, retiring in 1992 as Central Stores manager I. Memorials: American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.
Ernest H. McClurg, 65, died Sept. 9 at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. McClurg was a building service worker for Facilities and Services for 18 years, retiring in 2008. Memorials: Prairielands Council of the Boy Scouts, www.prairielandsbsa.org.
John Robert Ryan, 83, died Sept. 21 at his Urbana home. Ryan worked for the Printing Department as a camera and plate pressman for 16 years, retiring in 1993.
Jo “Carolyn” Swope, 75, died Sept. 20 at her Danville home. Swope worked for UI Cooperative Extension as a senior extension adviser for 34 years, retiring in 1992. Memorials: East Park Church of Christ, 1224 E. Voorhees St., Danville, IL 61834.
Vivian Maxine Thomas, 88, died Sept. 17 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Thomas worked as a secretary in the School of Social Work from 1971 to 1976. Memorials: Champaign County Humane Society, 1911 E. Main St., Urbana, IL 61801.
Billy H. Whitehead, 73, died Sept. 18 at his Paxton home. Whitehead worked for the Printing Department for 28 years, retiring in 2002 as a press technician II. Memorials: American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org.
Nancy Sue Williams, 66. died Sept. 23 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Williams was an office support specialist at Assembly Hall. She had worked at the UI for 25 years.
