Deaths

INSIDE ILLINOIS, June 7, 2012   [ Email | Share ]

Doris Bartle, 85, died May 9 at Heartland Health Care Center, Champaign. Bartle worked at the UI from 1962 until 1973. She was an instructor of French literature and a research assistant. Memorials: WILL-FM.

Helen M. Brighton, 84, died June 2 at her home in Champaign. Brighton retired in 1994 as administrative assistant to the vice president for academic affairs. Pre- and post-retirement, she worked at the UI for 24 years.

Robert E. Bounds, 78, died May 24 at the Champaign-Urbana Regional Rehab Center, Savoy. Bounds worked at the UI for 32 years, retiring in 1994 as a driver for University Housing. Memorials: Lewy Body Dementia Association.

Rebecca J. Manuel Gallivan, 69, died May 12 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Gallivan worked at the UI for 15 years, retiring in 2002. She was an assistant to the directors of the Illinois Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Research Center.

Roland Washburn Holmes, 91, died May 27 at his home in Plymouth, Mass. Holmes worked at the UI for 16 years, retiring in 1980. He was the director of General Curriculum and the director of Independent Plans of Study.

Helmut Hans Korst, 96, died June 1 at his home in Champaign. Korst was a mechanical engineering faculty member for 36 years, retiring in 1984. He served as department head from 1962 to 1974. Memorials: UI Foundation, Helmut H. Korst Awards Fund, 1305 W. Green St., Urbana, IL 61801.

Frederic Kovell, 70, died May 14 at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. Kovell worked at the UI for 16 years, retiring in 2005 as an instructional media systems technician for Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services. Memorials: Boy Scouts of America or the American Cancer Society.

Kenneth D. Pittman, 61, died May 17 at St. Anthony Hospital, Effingham. Pittman worked at the UI for 28 years, retiring in 2005 as an automotive technician for Facilities and Services. Memorials: American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org.

Memorial Service

A memorial service for Dorothy Dietrich Kolb, will begin at 2 p.m. June 24 at Clark-Lindsey Village, 101 W. Windsor Road, Urbana. Kolb, 96, died May 19 in Hammond, La. Kolb taught English and German at the UI. In 1968, she was chosen to be the first director of the Writing Laboratory at the UI, a position she held until her retirement.  Memorials: UI Library.
