Alexander Tumanov, associate professor of mathematics. "His work
intersects with several areas of research; his appointment was urged by
interaction with Tumanov in the coming years," said Gerald J. Janusz,
chair of mathematics. Tumanov's recommendation letters describe his work
as "elegant, deep and highly original," Janusz said. Research: several
complex variables, differential geometry and partial differential
equations. Teaching: partial differential equations for graduate students,
and calculus and analytic geometry for undergraduates. Education: MA,
Moscow State University; PhD, Moscow Institute. Tumanov came to the United
States as a visiting associate professor at Purdue University from 1991 to
1992, and was an assistant professor at UIC last year.
