Vladimir Gelfand, professor of cell and structural biology. "Vladimir is an internationally acclaimed scientist in the field of cytoskeletal

"His accomplishments are even more outstanding when one understands the
relative scientific isolation [at the Institute of Protein Research in the
Academy of Sciences in the former USSR] in which he managed to make these
major contributions." Research: biochemistry and cell biology of
cytoskeletal proteins, mechanisms of intracellular transport, biochemistry
of tubulin and microtubule-associated proteins, intracellular motility,
cell behavior. Teaching: Gelfand will be instrumental in developing a new
laboratory class, Animal Molecular Genetics, which will be taught in the
spring of 1995. Education: MSc (mathematics), Moscow State University; PhD
(cell biology), Institute of Protein Research, USSR Academy of Sciences;
DSc (cell biology), Moscow State University.
