UI's Thorn to head geography, Sligar to direct School of Chemical Sciences

Two UI professors have been named to administrative posts by the UI Board
of Trustees at its meeting April 8 in Urbana.

Colin E. Thorn was named head of the UI department of geography. Thorn
will succeed John Jakle, who resigned as head to return to teaching and
research. Thorn will begin his new duties May 21.

Before joining the geography faculty at Illinois in 1979, Thorn taught at
the University of Maryland and the University of Montana. He was acting
head of the UI geography department from 1987 to 1988.

Thorn earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Nottingham in
Great Britain, his master's at McGill University in Montreal and his
doctorate at the University of Colorado.
