Brief: Summer research grants available

Summer Salary Research Grants, made available from an endowment to support
international projects provided in part by the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation, will again be offered in 1995 by International Programs and
Studies.

Financial support is available for up to one-ninth of the applicant's
academic year salary, or a maximum of $3,500, whichever is less.

The grants are intended to fund both basic and applied research. To ensure
that applied research is recognized, some funds will be allocated
specifically to applied topics conducted by tenure-line faculty members.
Proposals will be judged primarily on perceived quality. Younger scholars,
Brief:  Saturday art classes to begin Sept. 11

The UI School of Art and Design will offer 12-week Saturday morning
classes for adults and children, beginning Sept. 11.

Separate classes for adults and students in grades seven through 12 will
offer instruction in a variety of media, including drawing, watercolor and
printmaking.

The classes for preschool children and students in grades one through
six will provide experiences in painting, sculpture, drawing and crafts.

The workshops function as laboratories for students majoring in art
education. The student instructors will teach under the immediate
supervision of members of the art education staff.

A registration fee of $50 per student will be charged.
