Brief: Jonas explains policy on Beckman use
Because there is an increasing number of requests for use of Beckman
Institute facilities, Jiri Jonas, director of the institute, asks that
people make note of the current building policy:
"We must restrict the use of meeting facilities here to accord priority
to functions that bear some relationship to Beckman Institute programs,"
Jonas said. "The demands for meeting spaces from our own programs have
been growing rapidly."
Institute facilities are available on the basis of the following
priority scale:
* Beckman Institute programs.
* Central and campus administration.
* Non-Beckman Institute units, working in areas related to institute
research themes.
* Campus units holding events of academic importance to the campus
but unrelated to institute research programs.
* Off-campus academic organizations whose activities are relevant to
the institute.
Use of institute facilities may be accorded to organizations other than
those categorized above, within or outside the university, when such use
does not interfere with other planned uses, and when the best interests of
the university would appear to be served. Such opportunities are likely to
be infrequent.
Likewise, the use of the atrium is limited to public functions that are
associated with Beckman Institute programs and related activities, or that
involve important events of campuswide character.
The institute will not charge university units to cover costs associated
with use of Beckman Institute facilities, unless there are special
requirements that result in significant additional out-of-pocket costs,
such as video recording, extension of normal personnel hours or special
cleanup. Requests for use of Beckman Institute facilities should be
addressed to Ann Riley in the director's office at 4-1176 or e-mail
