White House Counsel to speak at law school Monday
Abner J. Mikva, newly appointed While House Counsel and retired chief judge
of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, will deliver the
David C. Baum Memorial Lecture at the UI College of Law on Monday.
An Illinois native and former five-term congressman, Mikva will speak on
"Justice William J. Brennan Jr. and Civil Rights." The lecture will begin
at 4:15 p.m. in the Max L. Rowe Auditorium at the Law Building. It is free
and open to the public.
Mikva was appointed White House Counsel by President Clinton on Oct. 1,
taking over a post temporarily filled by Washington, D.C., lawyer Lloyd
Cutler. Mikva retired in September as chief judge of the federal appeals
court for the 11th circuit after serving on the court for 15 years. Before
that, he was in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Chicago's
South Side and, after redistricting, the suburban North Shore.
The lecture will be preceded by the dedication of the remodeled Max L. Rowe
Auditorium at 4 p.m.
