Brief: Emergency fund begins solicitation

The Faculty and Staff Emergency Fund begins its third annual
fund drive this month.

The fund was created by concerned members of the
university's staff and faculty to help members of the campus
community in crisis. Grants of up to $400 may be awarded to
eligible employees.

Since its inception, the fund has helped 77 UI families in
need. Past grants were used to pay for food, medication and
utilities, to repair fire-damaged homes, and to obtain
assistance in dealing with substance abuse.

The program is confidential, and each situation is reviewed
by the assistance program coordinator. All cases that meet
eligibility requirements are forwarded to a chancellor-
appointed executive committee for approval.

To apply for assistance, contact the Faculty and Staff
Assistance Program, 119 Observatory Building, 244-5312.

Contributions can be made through payroll deduction, check
or cash donations. Information has been sent to all faculty
and staff members.
