FROM THE DESK OF THE CHANCELLOR
One of the most valuable aspects of a true university community is the vast
array of perspectives, cultures and ideas of its students, faculty and
staff.
We can all take pride that our campus is a diverse one in which the lively
exchange of ideas happpens daily, and where free and unfettered speech is a
fact of life.
Being a citizen of such a community brings responsibilities as well as
opportunities. As each of us chooses the means to express thoughts and
feelings, we must remember that civility and collegiality are crucial
elements of an atmosphere that allows a full and free exploration of ideas.
To ensure that all viewpoints with merit are heard, we not only must
listen, but also must actively oppose any tendencies that will damage the
environment for learning and work in our university community. It will take
a vigilant effort by each of us to make this campus one in which every one
of us enjoys the acceptance and respect that are so essential to our
success both as individuals and as a university. I ask each member of this
community to play an active role in insuring that our campus climate is
always characterized by civility, collegiality and respect for others.
