Deaths
Robert Delzell
Robert Delzell, professor emeritus of library administration, died Sept. 14
at his home in Springfield, Mo. He was 76.
Delzell served as assistant to University Librarian Robert B. Downs and
retired in 1978 as the director of personnel of the library.
Delzell earned degrees at Drury College, Washington University and the UI.
He was a member of the American Library Association, Beta Phi Mu, the
Freedom to Read Foundation, the Missouri Library Association and the UI
Film Council. He was on the board of trustees of the Springfield-Green
County, Mo., Library District.
Survivors include several cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the library or arts organization of
the donor's choice.
Robert N. Farvolden
Robert N. Farvolden, former UI professor of geology, died Sept. 13 at
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He was 67.
Farvolden earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of
Alberta, and a doctorate from the UI. He joined the UI faculty in 1964,
where he did work in ground water geology.
He returned to Canada in 1967 as Canada's first professor of hydrogeology
at the University of Western Ontario.
At the time of his death, he was professor emeritus at the University of
Waterloo and a member of the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada.
Survivors include his wife, June Marie; a son; and a daughter.
Memorial contributions may be made to the R.N. Farvolden Scholarship for
Graduate Students, in care of Alumni Office, South Campus Hall, University
of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3G1 or through the Thomas Funeral Home,

that will be donated to the Tree of Life at the London Regional Cancer
Clinic in the family's name.
Carl W. Knox
Carl W. Knox, former dean of men, died Sept. 29 at Boca Raton Community
Hospital, Boca Raton, Fla. He was 79.
Knox earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the UI. He was a
football letterman in 1937 and 1938 and later coached freshman football
under UI head coach Robert Zuppke.
Knox was dean of men from 1959 to 1967. He retired in 1981 as vice
president for student affairs at Florida Atlantic University.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; a son; a brother; and three sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carl W. Knox Memorial Scholarship
Fund c/o the UI Foundation, Harker Hall.
Phillip Monypenny
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 7 for Phillip Monypenny,
professor emeritus of political science, who died June 4 at the age of 81.
The service will be held in 402-404 Levis Faculty Center.
Josef Nemeth
Josef Nemeth, retired microanalyst for the chemistry department, died Sept.
18 at DePaul Hospital, Bridgeton, Mo. He was 76.
Nemeth earned a degree in pharmacology in Hungary in 1942 and a master's
degree in chemistry from the UI in 1955.
He was on the UI staff from 1952 until 1988.
He was a member of the American Chemical Society.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes; a daughter; three sons; seven
grandchildren; and two brothers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the UI department of chemistry.
Maurice Rayburn
Maurice "Pete" Rayburn, painter, died Sept. 19 at Carle Foundation
Hospital, Urbana. He was 55.
Rayburn was on the UI staff for 13 years.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; three daughters; two sons; three
sisters; two brothers; and four grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church of Sadorus.
