Awards programs recognize, support innovative instruction

Each year, the campus sponsors programs that recognize excellence in
instruction as well as programs that encourage faculty to develop or revise
courses for undergraduates.

These programs - the awards, criteria for eligibility and deadlines for
application - are summarized below. Full descriptions of the prograrns are
available in departmental offices or on the Provost's home page
(http://www.uiuc.edu/colleges/provost/awards.html).

 * Harriet and Charles Luckman Undergraduate Teaching Awards
   Purpose: To recognize faculty members and graduate teaching assistants for
   outstanding efforts in undergraduate teaching. One of the award winners
   must be involved in teacher education.
   Award: Eleven winners are chosen each year (five faculty members and six
   graduate teaching assistants). Faculty members receive $5,000 in cash for
   their personal use, and a recurring increment of $3,000 is added to their
   annual salary; graduate teaching assistants receive $3,500 in cash, and a
   recurring salary increment of $1,000. In addition, faculty members will be
   awarded $2,500 and graduate assistants will be awarded $2,000 for the
   purchase of instructional materials or equipment.
   Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty members who have taught a
   minimum of one undergraduate-level course at UI for at least four full
   semesters prior to nomination; graduate teaching assistants who meet the
   same qualifications for two full semesters.
   Deadline: Nominations are due in the college office by Jan. 16 and in the
   Office of the Provost by Feb. 12.

 * Amoco Awards for Innovation in Undergraduate Instruction
   Purpose: To honor faculty members who have introduced particularly
   successful innovations into undergraduate instruction.
   Award: Two awards of $1,500 for the personal use of each of the faculty
   members selected to receive them.
   Eligibility: Faculty and academic staff members on regular appointment,
   whether tenured, tenure-track or non-tenure-track, who have undergraduate
   teaching responsibilities. Competition is open to those who have developed
   and implemented innovative approaches to undergraduate instruction without
   funding from the Educational Technologies Board or Undergraduate Course
   Development Awards program.
   Deadline: Nominations are due in the college office by Jan. 16, and in the
   Office of the Provost by Feb. 12.

 * Oakley-Kunde Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education
   Purpose: To foster and reward excellence of varying kinds within the broad
   domain of undergraduate education. The specific focus of the award is
   defined annually; for 1995-96, the focus is the involvement and guidance of
   undergraduates in research projects.
   Award: The award provides $2,000 for the personal use of the faculty member
   who is selected to receive it.
   Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty members.
   Deadline: Nominations are due in the college office by Jan. 16, and in the
   Office of the Provost by Feb. 12.

 * Campus Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching
   Purpose: To reward excellent graduate and professional instruction.
   Award: The award provides $5,000 in cash for the personal use of the
   faculty member selected, a recurring salary increment of $3,000, and $2,500
   for the purchase of instructional equipment or materials.
   Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty members with an appointment of
   50 or more in a unit that offers graduate or professional programs but not
   an undergraduate major.
   Deadline: Nominations are due in the college office by Jan. 16, and in the
   Office of the Provost by Feb.12.

 * Excellence in Extramural Teaching
   Purpose: To reward excellent extramural instruction.
   Award: Two awards are made annually. Each consists of $2,000 for personal
   use and $1,000 for improving extramural instruction and program
   development.
   Eligibility: Regular faculty members with the rank of instructor or above
   who have taught at least three credit courses administered by the Division
   of Extramural Programs in the past seven years.
   Deadline: Nominations are due in the Office of Extramural Programs by
   Feb. 12. For more information, contact the Office of Extramural Programs

 * Undergraduate Course Development Grants Program, Summer 1996. (Formerly
   known as the Undergraduate Instructional Awards Program.)
   Purpose: To support faculty members in the development of new courses and
   new approaches to teaching.
   Grant: The number of grants may vary; each typically provides a full-time
   salary for one month during the summer (one-ninth of the academic year
   salary).
   Eligibility: All faculty and academic staff on regular appointment, whether
   tenured, tenure-track or non-tenure-track.
   Deadline: Proposals are due in the college office by Dec. 1 and in the
   Office of the Provost by Jan. 20.

 * General Education Course Development Awards
   Purpose: To support faculty members in the development of general education
   courses that will 1) satisfy the non-Western/U.S. minorities cultural
   studies requirement; or 2) satisfy the natural sciences and technology
   requirement, particularly in courses suitable for non-majors.
   Award: Each award typically provides a full-time salary for one month
   during the summer (one-ninth of the academic year salary). The number of
   awards varies from year to year.
   Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty members.
   Deadline: Proposals are due in the college office by Dec. 1 and in the
   Office of the Provost by Jan. 20.

 * Educational Technologies Board Grants
   Purpose: To support the acquisition of instructional computing facilities
   and the introduction of learning technologies in education.
   Award: The number of grants and the amounts of individual awards may vary.
   Eligibility: Tenured or tenure-track faculty members.
   Deadline: To be announced.
