Brief: Research facilities information sought

Alwyn Eades, director of the Center for Microanalysis of Materials in the
Materials Research Laboratory, is compiling a directory of special research
facilities on campus.

"There are many scientific instruments on the Urbana-Champaign campus,
which are available to all users who can benefit from them," Eades said.
"The extraordinary resource represented by this collection of equipment and
the associated infrastructure is not used as effectively as it should be in
part because its existence is not always known to potential users."

In some cases, staff members support the machines, so that even
inexperienced users can do effective research with them, Eades said. In
some cases, charges are assessed for use of the instruments, in others not.

Eades' directory would list the equipment held, the techniques supported,
the person to contact and other relevant information. His plan is to make
the information widely available after its compilation.
