By Jim Barlow Bruce M. Chassy today became the first head of the department of food science and human nutrition in the UI's College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. The UI Board of Trustees approved his appointment last week. Chassy was the head of the department of food science when the College of Agriculture was renamed and reorganized. He has been interim head of the department of food science and human nutrition since it was formed in August 1995. The new department encompasses what previously were the division of foods and nutrition and the department of food science. Chassy will continue to hold the rank of professor of food science and of nutritional sciences. He was named head of the food science department in September 1994. He previously had been a research chemist in the laboratory of microbial ecology at the National Institute of Dental Research in Bethesda, Md., where he had worked since 1968. He also was a lecturer at American University in Washington, D.C., from 1970 to 1974. He received his bachelor's degree in 1962 from San Diego State University and a doctorate in 1965 from Cornell University. Chassy also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in 1964-65 at the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia.
