The UI Board of Trustees approved seven department heads and two department
chairs for the Urbana-Champaign campus at its July 11 meeting in Urbana.
Robert J. Hauser will become the first head of the department of agricultural
and consumer economics in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental
Sciences on July 21.
Hauser has served as interim head of the department since its creation in
August 1995 as part of the reorganization of the College of Agriculture.
He joined the UI department of agricultural economics in 1982. Hauser earned
his bachelor's and doctoral degrees at Iowa State University.
David E. Daniel, the L.B. Meaders Professor of Civil Engineering at the
University of Texas, will become head of the UI department of civil engineering
Aug. 21. He succeeds Neil M. Hawkins, who resigned as head to return to
full-time teaching and research.
Daniel, who also will carry the rank of professor, earned bachelor's, master's
and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas.
David Sansone will become chair of the department of the classics Aug. 21.
He succeeds James A. Dengate, who will return to full-time teaching and
research.
Before joining the UI in 1974, Sansone taught at the University of Hawaii.
He earned his bachelor's degree at Hamilton College, and his master's and
doctorate at the University of Wisconsin.
Richard J. Arnould will become head of the department of economics Aug.
21.
Arnould, the director of the Bureau of Economic and Business Research and
a professor of economics in the College of Commerce and Business Administration,
will succeed Case M. Sprenkle, who served as acting head during the last
academic year.
Arnould earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at Iowa State
University. A specialist in the economics of health care, he has taught
at the UI since 1967.
Constance H. Shapiro will become head of the department of human and community
development in the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences
on Aug. 21.
Shapiro, who also will carry the rank of professor, has been head of the
department of human services studies at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.,
since 1992. She will replace John C. Van Es, who served as interim head
of the department since its creation in August 1995 as part of the reorganization
of the College of Agriculture. Van Es will return to full-time research,
teaching and extension responsibilities in the department. He also will
resume duties as director of the Laboratory for Community and Economic Development.
Shapiro earned a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College, a master's degree
from Columbia University and a doctorate from Cornell. She joined the Cornell
faculty in 1974, and since 1991 she also has directed Cornell's Social Work
Program.
Jerry L. Morgan will begin his new duties as head of the department of linguistics
Aug. 21.
Morgan, a professor of linguistics and in the Beckman Institute for Advanced
Science and Technology, succeeds Elmer Antonsen, who resigned to return
to full-time teaching and research.
Morgan joined the UI faculty in 1970. He earned his bachelor's degree at
Indiana University and his doctorate at the University of Chicago.
Robert G. Wengert will become chair of the department of philosophy Aug.
21.
Wengert, who had been acting chair of the department, will succeed Timothy
G. McCarthy, who resigned as chair to return to full-time teaching and research.
Before coming to the UI in 1966, Wengert taught at the University of Toronto.
He earned his bachelor's degree at the Capuchin Seminary of St.
Mary, in Crown Point, Ind., and his doctorate at the University of Toronto.
John J. Lie, acting head of the department of sociology, will begin his
new duties as head of the department Aug. 21. Lie succeeds James R. Kluegel,
who resigned to return to full-time teaching and research.
Before joining the UI in 1991, Lie taught at the University of Oregon; the
University of California, Berkeley; Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea;
and the University of Hawaii, Manoa. He earned his bachelor's, master's
and doctoral degrees at Harvard University.
Bruce R. Halverson, chair and professor of the department of theater arts
at Ithaca College, Ithaca, N.Y., will become head of the department of theater
in the UI College of Fine and Applied Arts on Jan. 1, 1997.
Halverson, who also will carry the rank of professor, will succeed David
Knight, who resigned as head to devote full time to teaching and research.
Before serving on the faculty at Ithaca, Halverson was vice president for
development and institutional relations at Colgate Rochester Divinity School-Bexley
Hall-Crozer Theological Seminary, Rochester, N.Y. He also has taught on
the faculties of Rochester Institute of Technology; Denison University,
Granville, Ohio; California State University-Northridge, Los Angeles; and
Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa.
He earned his bachelor's degree at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D.,
and his doctorate at the University of Washington, Seattle.
