Earl Lee Cowley
Earl Lee Cowley, a 20-year employee of the Food Service Division of the
UI, died Oct. 7 at Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. He was 56.
He worked as a kitchen laborer at the Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Hall
since January 1977 and was featured in three in-house training videos. He
also assisted in new employee training each fall. He was nominated for the
Chancellor's Distinguished Staff Award by his last three food production
managers.
Survivors include his wife, Earlene; his mother; six children; one sister;
and eight grandchildren.
Jefferson L. Humphrey
Jefferson L. "Jeff" Humphrey, formerly assistant dean of students
in the Housing Division and the office of financial aid, died Oct. 23 at
Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana. He was 71.
Before coming to the UI, Humphrey was the dean of men at Winston-Salem State
University and was housing director at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.
He received his bachelor of education degree from Winston-Salem and a master
of science degree in education from New York University. He pursued doctoral
studies at the UI. He was inducted into Kappa Epsilon chapter of Alpha Kappa
Mu honor society in 1952 at Winston-Salem. Humphrey was a founding member
of Sigma Xi chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity at the UI. He was initiated
into the fraternity at Winston-Salem in 1951. He also organized the Phalanx
Club at the UI and conducted racial skills and cultural diversity workshops
at the UI.
Humphrey was a former member of the Urbana School Board, served in he U.S.
Army from 1946 to 1949, and was an active member of the Urbana Assembly
of God church.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; two daughters and two brothers.
