Have you ever dialed 911 by accident?

In making an off-campus telephone call, especially an overseas call, have you mistakenly reached the 911 emergency operator? If this happens to you, please stay on the phone and explain to the operator that you reached him or her by mistake. Since Champaign County now has what is know as an Enhanced 911 system, operators are provided the location of the caller. If someone calls 911 and then hangs up when he realizes his error, the 911 operator is trained to dispatch emergency personnel to the scene.

Changes at the university now allow campus callers to dial 911 (as opposed to 9-911) to reach the emergency operator. As a result, an increasing number of false calls are reaching the 911 operators. Telling the operator of your mistake will help to ensure that only emergency situations are being responded to.
