CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The annual fall open house at Japan House,
an educational and cultural center at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign, is planned for Oct. 19.
The
open house will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 2000 S. Lincoln
Ave., Urbana.Guest musicians David Wheeler and Yoko Hiraoka will perform
at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The pair is known internationally for their performances
on the shakuhachi (bamboo flute), Koto (13-string zither) and shamisen
(three-string lute).
Throughout the day, a tea ceremony will be conducted by members of the
Urbana-Champaign Association of Chado Urasenke Tankokai. Also, bonsai
trees, tools and figurines will be exhibited, along with calligraphy
by art and design students.
Other activities at Japan House this fall include lectures and workshops,
a series of events that introduce the public to "A Taste of Japan,"
and a designer trunk show. More information about these events and the
